When I first tasted this red in was part of a larger selection of wine from various countries, many from France, but both red and white. While many were good this seemed an undenibly easy choice. Located in the foothills of the Pyrennees, this old estate works without herbicides, pesticides or chemical fertilizers. The stony, rocky soils provide ideal drainage for the vines. This blend is a classic expression of the region: dark fruited with the rich flavors you'd expect from the warming Mediterranean sun. The most attractive aspects to this wine were the generous fruit and the soft texture. It managed to carry a fine line between being ripe while preserving it's sense of place and therefore varietal character as well. This is a wine suited to well-flavored dishes. Garlicky stews with earthy beans, robust pastas spiked with olives and herbs. Certainly now that the weather has warmed, try this with grilled meats. While the flavors are generous, the structure is soft enough to even sip with cheeses by the fire pit.

COCKTAIL CORNER
APRIL COCKTAIL: SCOFFLAW |
In this section we feature a well-tested, fool-proof cocktail recipe each month alongside Featured Spirits that make the drink worth stirring or shaking. This is your opportunity to learn about new cocktails or to revisit old favorites and to experience some of the best spirits available. |
APRIL COCKTAIL:
SCOFFLAW
This is a classic cocktail with a great history. This drink and the word scofflaw were invented at roughly the same time, during Prohibition in 1924. A prohibitionist held a contest to create a name/word to discourage those still drinking alcohol illegally. The word scofflaw won and most likely that evening the cocktail was born. Enough said.
Rittenhouse Rye Whiskey 100 Proof Bottled in Bond (Bardstown, Kentucky)
An old whiskey that fell out of favor for a time, this rye is a great value for fans of Manhattans, Sazeracs and now Scofflaws. The higher-proof gives cocktails a punch of flavor when mixing other ingredients. This is also Bottled in Bond, which requires being bottled at 100 Proof, from a single season's distillation and aged a minimum 4 years.
Dolin Dry Vermouth de Chambéry (France)
Dolin is one of the few independent producers of Vermouth and the only producer of Vermouth de Chambéry. This is a light easy drinking dry Vermouth with a very smooth flavor. This will enhance any martini or other cocktail needing dry Vermouth.

SCOFFLAW RECIPE:
I was introduced to this cocktail in January when visiting California. The drinks were so good, I couldn't wait to have another, we think you'll feel the same. One important note: use good grenadine. We've use the Employees Only grenadine from the cocktail bar in Manhattan. Grenadine is not difficult to make; here is a recipe from Imbibe Magazine where we found the Scofflaw cocktail.
1 ½ oz Rittenhouse Rye Whiskey
1 oz Dolin Dry Vemouth
3/4 oz fresh lemon juice
3/4 oz Employees Only Grenadine
lemon peel
In a shaker, combine the whiskey, vermouth, lemon juice, and grenadine. Fill with ice and shake well. Strain into a chilled cocktail glass and garnish with the lemon peel.
