4 Kilos was founded in 2006 by Sergio Caballero, a musician, filmmaker, and co-director of the Sonar festival of advanced music and multimedia arts, and Francesc Grimalt, winemaker, former partner of the Anima Negra Cellar and champion and revivalist of the unsung native grape, callet. In fact, if it weren’t for this partnership, the callet grape might not even exist on the Balearic Islands - and we wouldn’t be drinking this delicious example! 4 Kilos refers to the modest investment of 4 million pesetas to establish the winery, and reflects the philosophy that making great wine doesn’t require large amounts of money, just large amounts of passion. They have 15 hectares of certified organic and biodynamically farmed vineyards on the island of Mallorca, and focus largely on grapes rarely grown anywhere else in the world. ‘Motor América’ is a perfect example: made from 100% callet, an obscure indigenous grape brought back from the brink of being lost by Francesc’s efforts, it is simultaneously light, smooth, and concentrated, with delectable layers of cranberry sauce, cherry-pomegranate juice, and crushed herbs on a lithe frame that clocks in at a featherweight 10.5% ABV. Certified organic, biodynamically grown, vegan.
