The Weingut Geheimer Rat Dr. von Bassermann-Jordan has roots in Deidesheim dating back 300 years. From the time when Andreas Jordan immigrated to the Pfalz area from the Savoie in 1718, to 2002 when the estate passed out of the family’s hands, a succession of Drs. von Bassermann-Jordan had a significant hand in developing the wine industry of the region. Dr. Ludwig Bassermann-Jordan (1869-1914), for example, co-founded the German Association of Natural Wine Producers, which eventually became the national wine regulation board, the VDP. The winery itself takes its name from Ludwig’s brother, Geheimer Rat (Privy Councillor) Dr. Friedrich von Bassermann-Jordan (1872-1959). Meanwhile, in their own cellars the Bassermann-Jordans gathered and passed down expertise in producing high-quality riesling in the Palatinate region of the Rhine valley. The current managing director, Gunther Hauck, and winemaker Ulrich Mell have moved the enterprise toward organic farming practices and cultivation methods with climate protection in mind. Grapes for this riesling are hand harvested from vineyards around Forst, Deidesheim, and Ruppertsberg. After being gently pressed and settled on the must for 24 hours, spontaneous fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks followed by 5 months on the lees before bottling. This 2022 off-dry riesling brings out all the best aspects of their signature grape and home region: floral and fresh on the nose, with fresh peach and pear accents and zippy citrus notes that meld beautifully with the touch of sweetness unfolding slowly on the palate. Certified organic, biodynamically grown, low-intervention/natural wine.
