The family estate of Henri Bourgeois has been passed down for 10 generations, making it among the most venerable and respected family wineries in Sancerre. When Henri’s sons Remi and Jean-Marie took the helm, the family was inspired to search for new winemaking potential far beyond the borders of their native France, leading them on a 12 year quest that ultimately brought them to the other side of the world: Marlborough, New Zealand. In 2000 they purchased 98 ha of land tucked in the southern foothills of Marlborough’s Wairau Valley, and named their southern hemisphere vineyard ‘Clos Henri’. “Petit Clos” is made with pinot noir fruit from the estate’s younger vines, which are fermented in open top stainless steel vats, and aged in large French oak vats for 11 months, which imparts a subtle oak influence, allowing the freshness of the fruit and terroir to shine through. Juicy red berries, cherries, and plums are joined by hints of black pepper, cocoa, and dried herbs. Bright, mouthwatering acidity keeps this lively and palate cleansing, while a firm tannic structure runs all the way through the long, tangy finish. An elegant, incredibly food friendly bottle. Drink now or age 3-4 years. Certified organic, biodynamically grown, low-intervention/natural wine.
