If you are seeking out a masterclass in the old-school mentality of a Piedmont of yore, look no further than Brezza. Established in 1885, and still family-owned and operated, we are grateful for their uncompromising commitment to tradition, as their wines are quintessential expressions of a methodology of an older era. 4th-generation winemaker Enzo Brezza is now at the helm, making the bold (by Barolo standards) decision in 2010 to begin converting all of his vineyards to certified organic farming, gaining certification in 2015. Making use of compost, cover crops, and small tractors in the vineyard are but a few examples of his unwavering commitment to the health of his vines. This barbera hails from a plot in Cannubi-Moscatel and is only made in the very best of vintages. We’re hyped to be able to offer it to you! So full of depth, it’s like falling through a wishing well, it’s worth noting that most producers would have dedicated such a prized location to grafting nebbiolo and sell the wines as Barolo rather than focus on barbera. This bottle truly shows that barbera is to be taken as seriously as its colleagues with a perhaps more powerful reputation. Grapes are destemmed and then go through a fermentation typically lasting 8-10 days. Maceration then continues for another 4-6 days, depending on the vintage. After completing malolactic fermentation, the wine is aged in 1-3 year old Slavonian oak for 12 months, and then in bottle for an additional year before release. With the effortless elegance of Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffany’s, the tannins are as silky as her iconic white gloves. Fruitful with a pure sense of concentration, it is equal parts serious and tongue-in-cheek. Hi-toned red fruit is balanced by well-integrated oak and is perfect for Sunday sauce. Certified organic, low-intervention/natural wine.
