Cappelletti (full name Antica Erboristeria Cappelletti), was first established in 1906, and originally located in the Piazza Fiera in the heart of Trento. Best known for their red bitter Aperitivo Cappelletti, they have a well established reputation for producing amari and aperitivi utilizing the traditional herbs, flowers, and roots of the region. Located today in Aldeno, 20 km south of Trento, everything is still done in house by Luigi and Maddalena Cappelletti, the fourth generation of family producers. Rabarbaro liqueur has been produced for nearly a century, its distinctive bitterness derived from the main ingredient, a variety of Chinese rhubarb that has been grown for generations in Trentino Alto Adige. “Sfumato” is a nod to the Italian word for smoke (“fumo”), as well as a style of Renaissance painting defined by its play between areas of dark and light. This amaro echoes that mood: bitter herbs open the show, followed closely by warm spices, which continue across a palate dominated by woody, smoky, bittersweet notes. A fantastic digestif, this is delicious served on the rocks, with tonic or soda, or in gin or whiskey-based cocktails.
