The Colosi family owns and operates Cantine Colosi, located on the tiny volcanic island of Salina, close to the “toe” of Italy’s “boot.” They are the largest producer on the island. The first Pietro Colosi started producing wine with his friend in the 1970s. His son took over management of the property and cellar in 1987 after obtaining a degree in oenology. Today, a third generation Pietro, also a graduate in oenology, has taken the helm, still making wines with exclusively indigenous varietals. This nero d’Avola, locally known as calabrese, is the most widely planted red grape in Sicily. Fermented and aged in stainless steel, this bottle is full of red fruit, round on the palate, with some savory tones and well-integrated tannins. Vegan.
