To quote our distributor, Polaner Selections, “Jo Landron is a man whose modesty is only matched by his mustache.” Working alongside his vigneron father Pierre for 12 years before setting out on his own in the early aughts, Landron dramatically reshaped his family’s Les Brandières estate, Domaine de la Louvetrie—expanding it from 26 to 48 hectares, converting to organic and biodynamic practices (and ultimately earning certification for both!), and doubling down on terroir expression and overall quality—and subsequently put Muscadet wine on the map. And yet, he’s quick to pass the acclaim to the diversity of vineyards and low yielding vines before ever taking credit himself. Working (now across three different estates) with soils that range from clay, sandstone, silica and gneiss to metamorphic amphibolite, he cares meticulously for his fruit, harvesting by hand and doing a vigorous triage of the grapes. He presses whole clusters slowly and gently; fermentation isn’t rushed and takes place with the help of wild yeasts; and wines are bottled by gravity, unfined and unfiltered. Though the majority of his efforts are dedicated to Melon de Bourgogne, he also cultivates small quantities of folle blanche, pinot noir and chardonnay for this ultra crisp and refreshing sparkling wine. Immediately appealing, it wafts delightful aromas of honeysuckle, lemon balm and stony minerals that pour into a prickly but finessed palate of barely ripe quince, Anjou and Comice pear, lime zest and wet stone. Certified organic, certified biodynamic, low intervention/natural wine.
