Il Censo is a 65 hectare estate located in Bivona in south-central Sicily, near the town of Palazzo Adriana. It is now owned by Gaetano and Nicoletta Gargano, and has been in Gaetano’s family via his mother’s family, the Spotos, for over 200 years. “Il Censo” translates literally to “census” but more likely refers to a feudal system of tribute paid by tenant farmers to the landowning family, a phrase that was established long before the Spoto family took ownership. “700” is the elevation in meters that this Nero d’Avola is planted high on rolling volcanic terrain. This unique terroir contributes an impressive amount of vibrance to the natural deep, plush notes Nero d’Avola is known for, with an abundance of dark red fruit and great lift on a long finish. Certified organic, biodynamically grown, low-intervention/natural wine.
