Il Poggio does indeed sit on a Poggio, or “little hill,” northwest of the village of Gavi, though the name of the estate also refers to its proprietor, Francesca Poggio. Continuing her mother’s legacy, Francesca makes deliciously mineral whites from the traditional grape of the region, cortese. On south-southwest-facing slopes of the Rovereto Hills near the border of Piedmont and Liguria, Il Poggio’s vineyards benefit from plentiful sun, sand and clay soils, and the salty coolness of the sea to the south. The yields of the hand-harvested vines are kept intentionally low, and the aim in the winemaking is to intervene with the natural process as little as possible. This Gavi is clean and bright: floral with a touch of spice on the nose, herbs and lemon on the palate. Sustainably grown, low-intervention/natural wine, vegan.
