‘Duckman’ is a project/collection of wines by Maria João Pato and her father, Luís Pato, in the Bairrada region of Portugal. Boundary-bending and rebellious by definition, it was conceived as an -ART-isanal wine project meant to merge ancestral heritage with an intergenerational perspective designed to challenge the preconceived notions of the wine world - and the world at large. It was named in honor of the original Duckman, Grandpa João Pato ("Pato" the family name = duck), who lived between 1920 to 1984 and set the Pato family on its path to becoming the winemaking dynasty it is today. The Duckman wines are meant to boldly and transparently express the character of Bairrada’s native grape varietals as well as its unique maritime climate, without constraint from the region’s winemaking rules. ‘Ducking’ is a pet-nat made from the native sercialinho grape, directly pressed and spontaneously fermented in stainless steel with ambient yeast, finishing fermentation in bottle. The wine stays on the lees the entire time, and is bottled without fining, filtration, or added sulfur. This ‘Ducking’ is ready for a pool party: briny, zippy mango and tropical fruit shimmy across the palate before finishing dry and refreshing. Organically grown, vegan.
