Emma and Andrew Nielsen, originally from Australia, started making wine in Burgundy under the Le Grappin label in 2011. They source grapes from under-appreciated sites from around the region, with fantastic results. This cru Beaujolais comes from the ridge above the village of Fleurie known as Poncié. Picked by hand, the clusters rested intact for three weeks in concrete vats before being pressed into a wooden vat to finish fermenting with indigenous yeasts. It then aged in used barrels for 9 months. Juicy and dark for a gamay, it bursts with aromatics and has a very smooth texture. Green coffee beans and licorice mingle with black cherry and ripe strawberry, finishing with a whisper of raspberry and black pepper. Organically grown, low-intervention/natural wine.
