Nestled in the picturesque alpine area of Terlano in Alto Adige, Weingut Leya is a small three hectare winery with a fierce commitment to reflecting the unique terroir of the Südtirol by deftly melding tradition, modern innovation, and sustainability. It used to be part of the larger Terlano coop, but has since separated and now operates independently. Winemaker Malcom Salvadori carefully crafts each cuvée using minimal-intervention techniques that maintain the purity and character of each grape varietal. This gewürztraminer is made with grapes harvested from 25 year old vines from Vigna Gratlhof in Terlano. It sees two weeks of temperature-controlled fermentation in stainless steel followed by 8 months on the lees, also in stainless steel, before bottling. Distinctly alpine in style (and distinguished from Alsatian gewürztraminers by a pronounced evergreen forest character) it delivers subtle aromas over an unctuous, oil-slick texture on the palate, before finishing with nutty, lime-pithy notes. Organically grown, vegan.
