Masciarelli was founded in 1981 with a mere two hectares of vines. During those years, the region of Abruzzo was lacking in focus as a wine region, and Gianni Masciarelli chose to buck the trends of the time, instituting quality-driven viticultural practices inspired by the uncompromising standards of Burgundy and Champagne, and translating them to his home terroirs. Through this visionary approach, Masciarelli has grown from those humble beginnings to among the most respected wineries in Italy. The Cerasuolo appellation is one of the few appellations dedicated exclusively to rosé production, and as such, has a long history of producing rosé meant to be taken seriously. Masciarelli produced their first vintage of rosé in 1985, not long after the founding of the winery itself, and this current vintage demonstrates how well suited the montepulciano grape is to rosé. From sustainably farmed, hand harvested montepulciano d’Abruzzo, this dark magenta cuvée unfurls succulent layers of candied rose petal, wild strawberries dusted with dried thyme, and juicy crushed mulberries, backed by black tea tannins and zesty sour cherry acidity. It all finishes with a savory complexity that makes it a natural at the dinner table. Sustainably grown.
