Gerhard Pittnauer grows uniquely Austrian, boldly natural wines from autochthonous grape varieties. Pioneers in biodynamic farming in the Burgenland region, Gerhard and his wife Brigitte follow an unhurried schedule in the vineyard and the winery. They wait to pick until each variety reaches optimal ripeness, and they allow the fermentations to take place on the timeline that makes sense for each particular instance. This ‘Perfect Day’ blend includes 54% muskat ottonel (skin-fermented for 3 days), 29% sauvignon blanc and 8% chardonnay (two weeks on the skins), 5% traminer (20 days), and 4% briefly-macerated gelber muskateller. Each variety fermented spontaneously and aged separately in amphorae and old oak for six months and were subsequently blended just before bottling. Floral and fruity, this orange wine expresses simultaneously a bold earthiness and a subtle citrus undertone. Biodynamically grown, low-intervention/natural wine, vegan.
