The region of Vinho Verde is located in northwestern Portugal, north of the city of Porto, and has a long and storied history of winemaking. Established in 1984, the winery is owned by Antonio Monteiro, a retired horticulture professor intent on producing wines that are made in a style that honors the region’s traditions. Given the proximity to the ocean, humidity can be an issue for grape growing. To aid with this, the grapes are trained in the pergola style, lifted high above the ground to allow for aeration. Each variety, Loureiro and Trajadura, is vinified and fermented separately, allowing for the winemaker to blend and perfect the wine to exacting measures. Each season, the grapes are hand harvested, fermented with native yeasts in stainless steel and bottled, unfiltered, with a touch of effervescence, a hallmark of Vinho Verde made in this fresh, energetic, light bodied style. Organically grown, low-intervention/natural wine.
