Not every cider producer can claim to have an apple variety named after them - but in the case of the Caillouel family, it’s true! In 1886 Guillaume Caillouel, along with his son, Florentin, began growing apples and producing both cider and Calvados in the heart of Normandy, between the Seine and Risle Valleys. In search of the perfect cider apple, in 1886 they bred a new variety, distinguished by the red color of its pulp, that now bears their name. A couple of generations later, Paul Caillouel created Domaine Sicera to share his family’s ciders (and their eponymous apple variety) with a global audience. They cultivate a total of 15 different apple varieties across a total of 20 hectares of organically farmed orchards, with their unique clay and flint soils providing a distinctive terroir ideal for cider. All of their ciders are blends of several apple varieties. ‘Mariane’ is savory and textural on the palate, with notes of rosehips, white cranberry, pomegranate, and spice, and a whisper of residual sugar on the finish. Organically grown.
