Winemaker Beatriz Pérez grows grape varieties particular to her home region of Spain. Asturias is a green, rainy area along the north coast of Spain, east of Galicia. Famous for the steep slopes of its vineyards, the area around the town of Cangas del Narcea has a long winemaking history that is largely unknown today. Local varietals are making their way back into the international market thanks to enterprising producers such as Beatriz. For this ‘Tinto’ blend, she used 50% albarín negro, 20% mencía, 15% carrasquín, and 15% verdejo negro (elsewhere known as trousseau). With grapes harvested by hand, this wine fermented and aged for six months in stainless steel. Bottled with a minimal addition of sulfur. It has fresh red berry fruit, with a kick of pomegranate on the palate and smooth tannins for structure. Organically grown, low-intervention/natural wine.
