Olga and Barnaby Tuttle are not the only winemakers to trace the origin of their winery to a life-changing experience involving German riesling. There is definitely something in the water of the Mosel, or the soil of the slopes, or a combination. In Barnaby’s case, the experience took place in the form of a riesling tasting in Portland, Oregon in 2002, at the restaurant he was managing. A few short years later, the couple was marketing wine grown and made by their own hands, from vineyards they managed and other dry-farmed vineyards around the Willamette Valley. Focusing initially on riesling, Teutonic has delved into other varieties as well: this white tannat, for example, which comes from vineyards in California. Inspired by Basque cuisine, ‘Bacalao’ has the texture and savory complexity to accompany any hearty seafood stew you might be contemplating, be it with or without salt cod. A touch of palo santo and flowers on the nose leads to silky peach on the palate. Sustainably grown, low-intervention/natural wine.
